Erkan Baş's 50+1 response to Erdoğan: He is struggling to protect his seat

The Court of Cassation 3rd Criminal Chamber's refusal to comply with the Constitutional Court's (AYM) ruling on the violation of rights regarding Gezi prisoner and TİP Hatay MP Can Atalay, and its subsequent filing of a criminal complaint against AYM members, has triggered a crisis in the judiciary.

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the ruling wing have linked the judicial crisis to a new constitution.

Before the debate on a new constitution could conclude, Erdoğan created a new agenda by stating, "It would be appropriate to change the 50+1 requirement."

On this issue as well, government representatives pointed to Parliament and a new constitution. TİP Chairman Erkan Baş evaluated the topics on the agenda regarding the headlines, which are characterized as an attempt to create grounds for a new constitution.

'HE CANNOT TAKE A STEP'

According to the report by Cumhuriyet; Baş is of the opinion that the 50+1 percent system has become a "constraining factor" for Erdoğan. Stating that "The Palace regime is trying to overcome the impasse it finds itself in this time with the 50+1 percent move and constitutional amendment debates," Baş said, "What happened? The 50+1 system they brought for Erdoğan has now made it so that Erdoğan cannot act alone and cannot take a step without his junior partners. The moves to stage a coup against the judiciary, which have become even more apparent through the unlawful imprisonment of our Hatay MP Can Atalay, and Bahçeli's statement defending the 50+1 system show us that the pains of this impasse within the People's Alliance have also increased significantly."

'THE DOOR IS CLOSED TO THE GOVERNMENT'

Stating that Erdoğan is "struggling to protect his seat," Baş emphasized that they have closed the door to the government regarding a new constitution. Baş said, "We will not come together with a single man who cares about nothing other than his own power and interests, neither on a constitution nor on a system change. How can we take a step toward a new constitution with a criminal network that has held an elected MP captive for 6 months, arrests journalists one by one because it does not like what they write, continues to make shipments to Israel while people are being massacred in Palestine, and deems hunger, poverty, and death worthy for the laborers of this country?"

While expressing the view that a new constitution is absolutely necessary, Baş pointed out that there are certain requirements for a new constitution to be discussed. Baş stated, "The first step that must be taken for this constitution to be made is to end the Palace regime. If we are going to discuss a new constitution, we will first end the Erdoğan government and then determine our principles. The ones setting the game are already themselves. A constitutional negotiation cannot be held with those who have dragged this country into this state. This discussion is null and void for the Workers' Party of Turkey."
