F-35 dispute between Turkey and the US coming to an end

US Ambassador to Ankara Tom Barrack expressed optimism that the long-standing F-35 dispute between Turkey and the US could be resolved by the end of the year. Barrack stated that both countries are seeking a fresh start in their defense relations and that Congress is willing to take new steps on this matter.

Barrack noted Turkey's demands regarding either rejoining the F-35 program or receiving a refund of the 1.3 billion dollars paid before being expelled in 2019 due to the purchase of Russian S-400 missile defense systems. He also mentioned that Turkey is calling for the lifting of CAATSA sanctions and deeper defense-industrial cooperation with the US.

The Ambassador emphasized that many F-35 parts are produced in Turkey and that this situation is significant for Turkey as a NATO ally. "I believe we have an opportunity to reach a solution by the end of the year," Barrack said.

NEW DIALOGUE OPPORTUNITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST

Recalling the positive views of US Special Envoy for Syria Steve Witkoff regarding the Abraham Accords, Barrack said that the Middle East is ready for a new dialogue. "People are tired of the same stories, and we will see small steps. The situation in Gaza, in particular, is the biggest issue right now," he added.
