Following BBP and YRP, Saadet Party also calls for 'death penalty': 'Let's legislate it...'

Mahmut Arıkan of the Saadet Party held a press conference at the party's headquarters.

Stating that there is public concern regarding whether those who committed the murder of Narin Güran—whose lifeless body was found in a stream 19 days after she went missing in the Bağlar district of Diyarbakır—will receive the punishment they deserve, Arıkan spoke as follows:

'LET'S LEGISLATE THE DEATH PENALTY'

"Accepting this painful event where Narin was murdered as a turning point, let us implement changes that will make those who even consider such atrocities tremble. I am calling out to the government, which holds the parliamentary majority, and to all opposition parties; let us come together to increase the deterrent effect of punishments by amending the penal code and the execution law. Let us legislate the death penalty for murder, and specifically for child murders, within a very clearly defined framework. Furthermore, for us, the most important criterion is that the framework be clearly defined and limited to murder so that it does not turn into a tool for political revenge. We are carefully underlining this. As a society, we are all hearing calls for 'the death penalty' in the face of child murders that deeply shake our sense of justice. I am underlining this; as the Saadet Party, we only advocate for its necessity in the face of brutal acts. However, unfortunately, in this Turkey where justice is a toy of the mafia and the judiciary is bought with money, we think twice even when talking about the death penalty for child murders. Our hearts are burning; but even while saying 'death penalty,' we are afraid of getting caught up in the AK Party's political settling of scores. Turkey does not have to live through this hell."

2 OTHER PARTIES HAD ALSO CALLED FOR THE 'DEATH PENALTY'

Speaking at the 743rd Söğüt Ertuğrul Gazi Commemoration and Yörük Festivals held in the Söğüt district of Bilecik, BBP Chairman Mustafa Destici addressed the recovery of Narin Güran's body, stating, "Unfortunately, the lifeless body of our child Narin Güran has been reached. Since the first day, our eyes and hearts have been bleeding. Our hearts were breaking. Justice will be served for those who did this pain, this evil to her. The death penalty will come. You will hang them as a lesson to the world. Never again will anyone even think about assaulting the lives or chastity of our children," he said.

YRP Chairman Fatih Erbakan had said, "The death penalty must definitely be discussed again. We have stated this repeatedly before in terms of deterrence. Especially the murder of children in this way is truly a horrific event. It hurts our conscience."
