Burhan Özfatura, one of the former mayors of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, has passed away at the hospital where he was taken following a sudden cardiac arrest.

Dr. Burhan Özfatura, one of the former mayors of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, has passed away. Özfatura, who suffered a sudden cardiac arrest, had been taken to Dokuz Eylül University Hospital for treatment.
It was reported that despite all interventions in the Cardiovascular Surgery Intensive Care Unit, Özfatura could not be saved.
Born on June 8, 1943, in the Mustafakemalpaşa district of Bursa, Özfatura graduated from the Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences. During his public career, he served as an account expert at the Ministry of Finance and as the İzmir Revenue Office Director; he also worked as a lecturer.
Özfatura was elected Mayor of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality in the 1984 local elections as a candidate for the Motherland Party (ANAP). He held the position until 1989, when he handed it over to Yüksel Çakmur.
In the 1994 local elections, Özfatura was re-elected as the Mayor of the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, this time as a candidate for the True Path Party (DYP), and served until 1999. Following his career in politics and public administration, he also worked as a columnist for various newspapers.
