A fourth meeting has taken place between the imprisoned leader of the terrorist organization PKK, Abdullah Öcalan, and the DEM Party İmralı delegation. The meeting was held on İmralı Island with the participation of Van Deputy Pervin Buldan and Faik Özgür Erol, one of the lawyers from the Asrın Law Office. The delegation left the island after the meeting, which lasted several hours.
HOW DID THE PROCESS BEGIN?
The new resolution process began with a remarkable call made by MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli on October 22, 2024. Bahçeli's move, in which he called on the PKK to lay down its arms and suggested that Öcalan should announce the dissolution of the organization at the DEM Party group meeting in Parliament, had been widely discussed in politics.
THE CALL TO LAY DOWN ARMS CAME FROM ÖCALAN
The first meeting took place on December 28, 2024. This meeting, held between DEM Party deputies Pervin Buldan and Sırrı Süreyya Önder and Öcalan, was followed by a second visit on January 22 and then a third meeting on February 27, during which the call to lay down arms was made.
PKK leader Öcalan used the following expressions in his statement on February 27:
“I possess the competence and determination to provide the necessary positive contribution to the new paradigm supported by Mr. Bahçeli and Mr. Erdoğan. The delegation will share this approach of mine with both the state and political circles. In light of these, I am ready to take the necessary positive step and make the call.”
