İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay has responded to claims that municipal workers are receiving low wages, based on a payroll shared by executives of the DİSK Genel-İş Union. Tugay addressed the criticisms in a statement made via the social media platform X.
“THE FIGURES ON THE PAYROLL ARE MISLEADING”
Stating that the sections marked in green on the shared payroll show deductions made for various reasons, Tugay noted that the public is being misled. “The employee in question worked only 20 days instead of the required 26 days. For this reason, the wages for the 6 days not worked were deducted from their salary. Additionally, 965.81 TL was deducted because the employee took unpaid leave,” he said.
Tugay also listed other reasons for the low salary appearing on the payroll. He stated that the employee had received an advance payment of 16,947 TL, which was reflected as a deduction from the salary on the payroll. He also stated that another deduction of 2,947 lira and 42 kuruş for food aid was processed on the payroll.
“ADD THESE UP, AND THE REAL SALARY WILL EMERGE”
Tugay emphasized that the sum of these deductions constitutes the low figure seen on the payroll. “You add these items up and add them to the figure they announced as the normal salary. See for yourself what the truth is,” he said.
“ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!”
Making a sharp statement at the end of his remarks, Tugay said, “Enough is enough! Politics cannot be done by misleading the public in this way. Our municipality displays a transparent and fair approach toward its employees. We respect everyone's labor, but we will not remain silent against slander.”
In his post, Cemil Tugay included the following statements:
"In this example, the reason the employee's salary appears low is entirely due to personal choices:
They worked only 20 days instead of 26.
An advance of 16,947 TL was used.
An unpaid leave deduction of 961.85 TL was made.
A travel allowance deduction of 1,720 TL was applied.
A food aid deduction of 2,947.42 TL was applied.
Furthermore, if the employee had worked the full 26 days;
1,300 TL net meal allowance,
231.76 TL net hardship premium,
508.43 TL net attendance incentive premium
would have been earned. These payments were not made because they worked fewer days.
When all these factors are taken into account, although the employee's net salary for this month appears low, their total monthly grossed-up wage would have been 67,461.57 TL if they had worked the full 26 days.
Therefore, the low salary is due to the employee's own choices."
