As discussions regarding the İmralı process continue, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel brought a striking claim to the agenda in his latest interview. Özel stated that a high-level figure from the AKP had made a proposal to the CHP for a secret visit to İmralı.
The main agenda in Turkey in recent days has been the meeting held at İmralı. In line with the decision of the commission established in Parliament, a 3-person delegation consisting only of members from the AKP, MHP, and DEM Party went to the island and met with terrorist leader Abdullah Öcalan.
The CHP, however, neither provided a member to the commission nor participated in the vote.
NO COMMENT FROM ERDOĞAN
Following the CHP's decision regarding the visit, criticisms were directed from the government and the DEM Party.
While the public was curious about what President Erdoğan's stance would be, Erdoğan did not make any comments on the matter. This silence led to debates regarding the social reception of the visit.
Sharing new information about the process in his interview, Özel recounted the proposal made to them before the AKP's decision as follows:
He revealed that an influential figure from the AKP said, "You come to the island too. There will be no video, there will be no photos. The day of departure and the day of return will not be known. A ferry will not be used; it will be a helicopter. Journalists should not see it. We will say 'Someone from the CHP went,' and if you want, the name can remain secret."
Özel stated that he responded to this proposal by asking, "Is this even a visit then?" and that the other party replied, "This is how it will be done."
"AKP IS CONDUCTING THE PROCESS BASED ON PROFIT AND RISK"
In his statement, Özel also voiced criticisms regarding the way the process is being managed. Stating that the AKP is making political calculations by considering the MHP's stance, Özel emphasized that the CHP's position is clear.
Saying that they made their decision in line with the expectations of the CHP base, Özel expressed that the difference between the expectations of the DEM Party base and the CHP base is natural and should be met with understanding.
"THEY SAID LET THE VOTE BE SECRET, OR EVEN NO VOTE AT ALL"
Arguing that the AKP tried to conduct the process in secret during the meetings held in the commission, Özel said, "They did not speak at all in the public part of the commission. They said, 'Let the vote be secret,' or even 'Let there be no vote at all.'"
"THE MINUTES MUST BE SHARED AS THEY ARE"
While uncertainty regarding the content of the meeting continues, the DEM Party had requested that the minutes be disclosed to the public in their entirety. Özel reiterated the same demand.
Saying, "The minutes from İmralı must be shared with the commission exactly as they are," Özel stated that commission members could thus learn the content of the meeting and parties could determine their stance accordingly. Özel stated that they would support the disclosure of the minutes if they believed there was nothing that needed to be hidden.
