The New Year's Market organized by the municipality in the Odunpazarı district of Eskişehir was attacked by an individual named Burak Özger in the early hours of the morning.
Özger damaged stalls, lights, tents, and tables while shouting, "This is a Sharia country."
Targeting statues of Atatürk and İsmet İnönü, the attacker said, "We will tear all of these down one day."
Police teams arriving at the scene took the attacker into custody.
Odunpazarı Mayor Kazım Kurt, in his statement regarding the attack, said, "We invite all our fellow citizens to be sensitive against such provocations and to protect the values of our district together." Mayor Kazım Kurt added, "As a municipality that has adopted the principles and revolutions of Atatürk and is committed to the values of the Republic, we emphasize once again that such provocations will never achieve their goal and that we will continue to uphold the legacy of our Republic's founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk."
SUPPORT FOR THE ATTACKER FROM THE OTTOMAN HEARTHS
According to the news reported by Sözcü from Gazete Pencere, former Eskişehir Provincial President of the Ottoman Hearths, Esat Demirtaş, also expressed support for Burak Özger following the attack.
Esat Demirtaş shared the message, "Burak Özger is a man...... No Muslim who harbors hostility toward him is my brother. Everyone should come to their senses. There is no lawless village here; if there is anyone whose mother gave birth to a brave one, let them come forward."
Esat Demirtaş further supported the attacker by saying, "Burak Özger.... Well done, my lion, we do not celebrate NEW YEAR'S. We are against those who remove Ramadan tents and embrace Christian customs. DIE, my brother, there will be many who pray for you. DIE, DIE so that we may cast Islamic soil upon you."
"I AM IN THE MANAGEMENT OF OUR 200 THOUSAND-PERSON ARMY"
During his time as the Provincial President of the Ottoman Hearths, Esat Demirtaş stated in a speech in 2022 that they were preparing for the 2023 elections with a "social media army" consisting of 200 thousand people, saying, "I am in the management of our 200 thousand-person army. We are also waging a social media war that you are unaware of. I want you to know this. We are managing that place now. We have taken it out of everyone's hands."
