The announcement by Istanbul University regarding the cancellation of the diploma of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is currently detained at Silivri Prison, had caused a wide stir in public opinion. However, this decision, announced on March 18, has not been formalized despite 40 days having passed.
STARTED IN 1988, TRANSFERRED IN 1990
İmamoğlu began his academic life at Girne American University in 1988. In 1990, he transferred to the Istanbul University Faculty of Business Administration (English). An investigation was launched by the university following a report filed during his mayoral candidacy regarding İmamoğlu, who graduated from this faculty.
UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION ANNOUNCED IT, BUT THE DECISION IS NOT OFFICIAL
In a public statement made by Istanbul University on March 18, it was announced that İmamoğlu's diploma had been cancelled. However, this statement was made at the administrative level rather than by the university's official decision-making bodies, such as the faculty board or the senate.
There is no decision that has been taken, signed, and formalized by the Faculty of Business Administration.
SIGNATURE CRISIS AND NOTIFICATION OBSTACLE
According to the information obtained, some of the dean signatures required for the decision to become official have not yet been signed. For this reason, the notification regarding the decision could not be made. Lawyers state that they can only initiate the legal appeal process after this notification. However, the official text of the decision has not yet been delivered to İmamoğlu's side.
STILL APPEARS AS A GRADUATE ON E-DEVLET
İmamoğlu's graduation information continues to appear as an Istanbul University graduate in inquiries made via e-Devlet. This shows that the decision has not yet had a systemic or institutional reflection.
ÖZGÜR ÖZEL: NO APPEAL WITHOUT NOTIFICATION
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel also emphasized in his statement on the subject that although the decision was announced, it has not gained official status and İmamoğlu's lawyers have not yet received any official documents. Özel stated, "We will file our appeal as soon as the notification is made."
