The AKP lost the March 31 local elections and fell to the position of the second party across Turkey.
While the CHP emerged victorious from the elections, it also took over the administration of many metropolitan municipalities. As political balances shifted after the elections, the CHP began to increase its calls for early elections.
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel gave the first signals regarding the strategy his party will follow for the presidential elections. Stating that party members will have a say in the candidate determination process, Özel said, "We will determine our presidential candidate with 1 million 600 thousand CHP members."
In recent days, Özel held a critical meeting with Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş.
Following this meeting, Yavaş announced that he would not participate in the primary election process.
CHP'S FORMULA FOR THE PRESIDENCY
On Halk TV, İsmail Küçükkaya explained the CHP's roadmap for the presidential elections and shared the strategy personally determined by Özgür Özel. Küçükkaya stated that he obtained this information from the highest-level sources within the CHP.
According to what Küçükkaya conveyed, Özel's biggest goal is "to end the Justice and Development Party government and the Erdoğan era." Özel stated that he would not be a presidential candidate himself, but that he wants to be the person managing the process.
The highlights from İsmail Küçükkaya's statements are as follows:
It is planned for Ekrem İmamoğlu to be the presidential candidate. Considering the administration of the major cities won by the CHP and the success in the local elections, according to Özel, İmamoğlu has broad support among the public.
Özel emphasizes that he wants to be the person who manages the process required for winning the election and for Turkey to transition to a parliamentary system.
As for Mansur Yavaş, the position of Speaker of the Parliament is being considered. The CHP plans to position Yavaş as the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), which ranks second in the state protocol after the President.
In the continuation of the plan, it is envisioned that Yavaş would serve as an impartial President following Turkey's transition to a parliamentary system.
Küçükkaya said that the CHP aims to form a broad alliance by sharing this strategy with other opposition parties as well. Özel uses the expression, "We will not carry out this process alone as the CHP. I will be in cooperation with other actors of the opposition and will ensure coordination."
