Özgür Demirtaş reacts to the government's 'trustee' move: 'Those who go around talking about national will...'

Mehmet Sıddık Akış, who was elected as the DEM Party Co-Mayor in the March 31 local elections, has been detained in Van. Following Akış's detention, the Ministry of Interior announced in a statement that Governor Ali Çelik has been appointed as the Deputy Mayor of the Hakkari Municipality. Additionally, the Hakkari Governor's Office has banned all types of protests, including marches, meetings, press statements, and sit-ins, throughout the province for a period of 10 days.

Prof. Dr. Özgür Demirtaş reacted to the appointment of a trustee on his social media account and wrote the following:

In a state governed by the rule of law, the path to follow if a politician has committed a crime is clear. "If a mayor commits a crime, they are removed from office once the crime is legally established. In their place, someone from among the members of that municipality's council is elected as 'acting mayor,' and the elected will continues to serve. If they also commit a crime, the process repeats..."

It is tragic that those who go around talking about the 'national will' do not recognize the national will itself.

If there is the slightest ERROR in what I have written, please warn me: I do not find the appointment of trustees to be correct. I find the appointment of trustees (wherever and to whomever it may be) to be contrary to the National Will. My CLEAR views on this matter are as follows. If I have the slightest logical error, please warn me: 1) If a person is guilty, whether due to terrorism or any other reason, they should immediately serve their sentence.

2) If a person is associated with terrorist organizations, they should never be a candidate in elections. 3) If a person is nominated as a candidate in elections despite being known to have ties to terrorist organizations, the government that nominated that person has a vested interest in this matter.

4) If a person is associated with terrorist organizations, they should not be able to be a candidate. If they have become a candidate, it should not be claimed that they have ties to terrorist organizations. The only exception to this is an intelligence failure by the government, or it is intentional. 5) Let's say a mayor became a candidate (having passed through intelligence that is said to be very strong (!)) and was elected, and later their relationship with terrorism was revealed. In this case, like any criminal, they are removed from office.

6) A trustee is NOT APPOINTED to replace a dismissed Mayor. This is contrary to the National Will. The Municipal Council elects a new Mayor. If the National Intelligence Organization has incredibly and mistakenly issued a clean record certificate to the newly elected mayor as well!!, they are also dismissed, and the Council elects a new Mayor. 7) Appointing a trustee would mean disregarding the elections. It is a coup against democracy. And a coup against democracy eventually comes back to strike a blow at the ECONOMY, which is my area of expertise. I suggest we please do not do this.
