The political agenda heated up following the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel announced a surprise decision in response to the developments, stating that his party is facing the threat of a trustee appointment.

Announcing that the CHP will hold an extraordinary convention on Sunday, April 6, 2025, Özel said, "They want to appoint a trustee to Atatürk's party."

Özel stated, “With the authority granted to me by our bylaws, we have decided to take our party to an extraordinary convention. We have submitted our application to the Çankaya District Election Board. At our convention, we will re-elect all our bodies, including the chairman. In this way, we will completely eliminate the trustee discussions.”

The CHP leader also announced that he would be a candidate for chairman again at the convention where the election will be held. Özel said, "We are a democratic party. Of course, all our party members who wish can be candidates."

After Özgür Özel's extraordinary convention decision, all eyes turned to the former CHP chairman, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. While questions like "Will Kılıçdaroğlu be a candidate?" are being discussed in the lobbies, a striking comment came from journalist Fatih Portakal.

PORTAKAL: "ANYONE OPPOSING ÖZEL IS A TROJAN HORSE"

Speaking on Sözcü TV, Fatih Portakal evaluated the possibility of a rival emerging against Özgür Özel from within the CHP. Portakal said, "If a candidate emerges against Özgür Özel in such a critical environment, in my opinion, this is a Trojan horse. Any candidate who emerges in this period is thinking not of the party, but of other agendas. I would see them not as someone concerned with intra-party democracy, but as a person of petty calculations."

SUPPORT MESSAGE FOR THE CONVENTION DECISION FROM KILIÇDAROĞLU

Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, to whom all eyes were turned, broke his silence in the following hours. Making a statement on his social media account, Kılıçdaroğlu stated that he supports the convention decision and sent a message to Özgür Özel and his administration.
