The diploma cancellation decision regarding Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu was made on March 19, just one day before he was taken into custody. However, Istanbul University has been unable to officially serve this decision to İmamoğlu and 28 other individuals, despite 50 days having passed.
Istanbul University Rector Prof. Dr. Osman Bülent Zülfikar made a statement regarding why the notification could not be completed.
According to the report by Alican Uludağ from Now Haber, Zülfikar stated, "We do not have the population records and current addresses of 28 people. Therefore, we are waiting for their notification addresses. For those whose information is complete, the cancellation procedures began last week."
NOTIFICATION COULD NOT BE MADE WHILE İMAMOĞLU WAS IN SILIVRI
While Zülfikar's statements sparked controversy, the question of "Why couldn't the university access the information when it was public knowledge that İmamoğlu was in Silivri Prison?" has come to the fore. Reactions have focused on the fact that the university was unable to access this information despite the IMM Mayor's legal address and identity information being available in state institutions.
ISTANBUL UNIVERSITY SHIFTED RESPONSIBILITY TO THE MINISTRY OF INTERIOR
The university cited the failure of the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs to provide the necessary information as the reason for the inability to serve the notification. No clear answer was given to the question of why no action was taken during the 50-day period.
EVASIVE RESPONSE TO THE QUESTION "IS IT INTENDED TO PREVENT HIS CANDIDACY?"
Regarding the question of whether the decision was made to influence the presidential candidacy process, Istanbul University stated, "It is important that universities do not take part in daily political debates and remain on a scientific basis."
