The long-awaited approval for Turkey to purchase Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets has finally been granted. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan received a positive signal after meeting with the German Chancellor and Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Merz at the NATO summit. This development marks a significant step for Turkey's plans to enhance its defense capabilities.
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel was instrumental in changing the stance of Germany's Social Democratic Party (SPD) following his meetings with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and SPD Co-Chair Lars Klingbeil. The sale, which had previously been suspended due to the arrest of İmamoğlu and the change in government in Germany, has returned to the agenda with the SPD's approval.
Turkey had ordered 40 Eurofighter jets, which are jointly produced by Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The aircraft are planned to be delivered in two batches of 20+20. This development was also welcomed at the production center in Munich, where preparations for new orders have begun.
In his statement following the NATO meetings, President Erdoğan noted that contacts with the UK and Germany are ongoing and that positive developments are taking place. With the preliminary approval from the CDU/CSU and the SPD in Germany, there are no longer any obstacles to the sale of the fighter jets to Turkey.
