As Ankara prepares to host NATO leaders on July 7-8, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan made assessments regarding the summit. Minister Fidan emphasized that Turkey was the deciding factor in US President Donald Trump's participation.
Fidan stated, "If it weren't for our President, if it weren't for Turkey, Trump would not have come." He conveyed that many countries in Europe also expressed that the meeting held in Ankara under the President's hosting was the most important factor that made Trump's participation possible.
Speaking to Sevil Nuriyeva from the Türkiye newspaper during his visit to Russia, Fidan stated that preparations for the NATO summit are continuing intensively and that there are many important issues on the agenda. The Minister said, "It is important how the differences in the perspectives of the US and European countries regarding NATO will reflect on the course of the meeting." He also added that it is not possible to make decisions on such critical issues without the US President.
Touching upon his contacts in Russia, Hakan Fidan reported that there is no problem in working together on important issues between Moscow and Turkey. He used the following expressions: "In all these meetings, we saw this: There is no problem in working together on bilateral relations and regional issues. There are no issues that cause major complaints in bilateral relations. Both countries want to cooperate in every possible field. We also took the pulse of our business people. Their impression is the same. Mutual visits are continuing."
Regarding the content of the talks, Fidan stated that they are in cooperation and communication in line with the visions of the leaders of the two countries. Regarding the Ukraine crisis, he conveyed that Russian officials do not intend to change their approach until the Donetsk issue is resolved.
