President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House. This meeting, which took place in the Oval Office, has sparked political repercussions in Turkey.

CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır reacted sharply to the meeting in a statement made via social media. Başarır stated that Erdoğan remained silent in the face of Trump and described the meeting as a fiasco.

"TRUMP SPOKE, ERDOĞAN REMAINED SILENT!"

In his statement, Başarır included the following remarks: "Get the news from Trump... Trump says; 'I called, Erdoğan released Pastor Brunson.' What a shame this is! Even if the Minister of Justice says 'Turkey is a state of law' not 75 times, but 7575 times, this shame will not be wiped away! There is no judiciary, there are instructions! In one word, this is a disgrace! Every aspect of the meeting between Erdoğan and Trump is a separate fiasco! Trump says; 'Erdoğan asked me for a favor regarding Halkbank,' 'Do not buy oil from Russia,' 'He knows about those rigged elections better than anyone.' Judiciary and foreign policy by phone, by bargaining, by instruction! There is no independent judiciary, no sovereignty, and absolutely no objection! Trump spoke, the 'leader of the century' remained silent!"

These statements by Başarır have reignited debates in Turkey regarding foreign policy and judicial independence.
