Mehmet Aydın, who was elected Mayor of Çumra from the New Welfare Party (Yeniden Refah Partisi) in the March 31, 2024 local elections, had been continuing his duties as an independent after resigning from his party. However, it has been reported that Aydın has decided to join the AKP and that his party pin will be attached by AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the group meeting to be held on Wednesday.
According to the report by Sözcü, Aydın, who has been serving as an independent for approximately nine months, decided to join the party following his meetings with AKP officials.
The New Welfare Party had won six district municipalities in Konya in the March 31, 2024 elections. However, with all of these mayors resigning and switching to the AKP, the party has lost all of its municipalities in the city. This situation has caused the number of AKP municipalities in Konya to increase to 24.
Additionally, Seydişehir Mayor Hasan Ustaoğlu from the CHP and Ahırlı Mayor Ali Üzlük from the IYI Party had also recently joined the AKP. These transfers have further consolidated the AKP's political power in Konya.
