He said 'one should leave at the peak'... Ahmet Hakan's reaction to Bülent Arınç: 'He keeps talking'

Bülent Arınç, one of the former prominent figures of the AKP who remains in the spotlight with his statements despite having left active politics, made noteworthy comments during a recent television program. Arınç stated that leaders should leave their posts while at their peak, citing former German Chancellor Angela Merkel as an example. Arınç said, "One must leave at the peak," adding that otherwise, it would be difficult to be remembered well.

Hürriyet Editor-in-Chief Ahmet Hakan addressed Arınç's words in his column today. Hakan commented, "These words are likely directed at President Erdoğan," and drew attention to Arınç's own situation.

“We look at Bülent Arınç's situation; he is not at the peak, not one level below the peak, not three levels below the peak, not even near the letter 'p' of the peak; he is miles away from the peak. Despite this, he doesn't say 'let me be quiet, sit down, and step aside.' He keeps talking. He keeps engaging in controlled opposition to the government. He keeps doing little bits of mischief.”

Ahmet Hakan made the following assessment in his column:

“We all know that:

Bülent Arınç actually wants to be somewhere right by the side of the one at the peak.

We also all know that:

If he were told from the peak today, 'Come on, Brother Bülent! Be a minister, be a president, be this, be that,' he would go running.

So why does Bülent Arınç act like this?

Why does he tell the one at the peak, 'One should leave politics while at the peak'?

Why would he say it?

He is trying to get the attention of the one at the peak.

The message he wants to convey is quite clear:

'Hey, you at the peak! See me! I am available here.'

If the one at the peak were to see him...

That is when he would start...

'Can one leave politics while at the peak? Just when such great experience has been gained... Oh, Mr. President. Please do not leave us. May God not take you away from us,' and so on.”
