During the deliberations on the 2026 Budget Law Proposal at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), tense moments occurred between CHP Şanlıurfa MP Mahmut Tanal and AKP Group Deputy Chair Özlem Zengin. In his speech at the podium, Tanal drew attention to the foreign connections of ministers and the families of the president.
Tanal stated, "A minister of this country cannot have their children educated abroad. They say 'what is it to you?' A minister of this country cannot be a Belgian citizen. If the grandchildren of this country's president have acquired American citizenship, they cannot. Bring the records then. You are lying."
ZENGİN'S RESPONSE TO TANAL
Özlem Zengin responded to Tanal's claims, saying, "The speaker corrected his own lie. You are making this speech right now. The Minister's children are studying here. He was an ambassador before. He was in Algeria because he was an ambassador. His children are here, they are working here, and they are studying here."
While it is known that Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş was born in Brussels, Belgium, this topic also came up during the debate.
