CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu is emerging from Silivri Prison, where he is being held, with increasing public support. In the latest poll conducted by the HBS Research Company between July 16-19, 2025, İmamoğlu reached a 54.9 percent vote share.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan remained at 41.3 percent. The poll's sample was created using the face-to-face interview method with 3,200 people.
The rate of those stating they would cast a protest vote was recorded at 3.8 percent.
İmamoğlu had officially announced his presidential candidacy with a statement he made at the CHP Headquarters on March 6, 2025. Striking steps were taken within just 12 days after he completed his candidacy application.
First, his university diploma, which he had earned the right to receive 31 years ago, was cancelled. Later, on March 19, İmamoğlu was detained as part of an investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.
Brought to court on March 23, İmamoğlu was arrested and sent to Silivri Prison.
CANDIDACY BLOCKED, SUPPORT COULD NOT BE STOPPED
With İmamoğlu's arrest, practices such as removing his posters from billboards, banning his audio announcements in subways, and restricting access to his social media accounts were put into effect. However, these restrictions could not stop the support forming in the public eye.
While the CHP described the cancellation of İmamoğlu's diploma as "unlawful and political," it took the matter to the judiciary. According to party sources, the diploma decision will be reversed and the candidacy will regain its legal standing.
THE GAP IN THE POLLS IS GROWING
Research conducted before İmamoğlu's arrest also showed that he drew a strong profile against Erdoğan. However, the latest research conducted by HBS in mid-July revealed that his imprisonment did not decrease public support, but rather solidified it.
İmamoğlu, who leads Erdoğan by 13.6 points with 54.9 percent support, has achieved one of the largest margins in the polls conducted so far.
The CHP leadership continues its preparations to remove the legal obstacles to İmamoğlu's candidacy. Party officials argue that the decision to cancel the diploma is contrary to the constitution and higher education legislation, and they state that this process will be overturned by the judiciary.
