High-level resignation in IYI Party ahead of convention!

 IYI Party Deputy Chairman Birol Aydemir has resigned.

The IYI Party, which decided to enter the local elections "freely and independently," did not achieve the results it expected on the evening of March 31.

Receiving 3.77 percent of the vote, the IYI Party fell to the position of the sixth-largest party across Turkey. IYI Party Chair Meral Akşener announced that she would not be a candidate, calling for a convention.

While all eyes in the IYI Party are on the convention scheduled for April 27, news of a resignation has arrived.

IYI Party Deputy Chairman Birol Aydemir announced that he has resigned from his position and his party membership.

Announcing his resignation on his social media account, Birol Aydemir included the following statements in his declaration:

"I hereby inform the public that I have resigned from my duties and membership in the IYI Party. I viewed politics solely as a tool to do good things for our country and our nation. That is why I entered politics. Because our country, where institutionalism is quite weak, is excessively affected by politics in all its social, economic, and legal components. I did not refrain from expressing my ideas in the decision-making bodies of our party on the path to becoming the "right" alternative in our country's current political atmosphere. However, unfortunately, I have observed with sadness that I cannot continue on the same path as my colleagues in the party. For this reason, I have decided to leave the IYI Party. However, I hope to continue to offer my knowledge and experience to the service of our country and to work/produce in this direction from now on.

We are going through one of the most troubled periods in Republican history. Neither the young nor the old have any hope left. Today, the country's real need is not the "keeping alive of ideological thoughts." The problem of this country is the father who cannot buy what his child wants on his way home. It is the millions who cannot pay their bills. It is those who cannot pay their rent. It is the family that cannot afford to educate their child who has won a university spot out of town. Turkey's survival problem is its exhausted people. We are living through a process where justice is almost non-existent in any field, the law is trampled upon, the judiciary does not function, freedoms are restricted, institutions have become quite weak, loyalty is taken as the basis instead of merit, and there is no transparency or accountability in public administration. All of these are a real survival problem for our beautiful country. And the entire political system, including the government and the opposition, is responsible for all of this.

The language, style, and rules of the game in our country's politics have been corrupted, but one thing has not changed: Those who show favor to their people have always been favored in return. Those who focus on specific ethnic/social divisions, on the other hand, have been trapped in a narrow window that is full of rhetoric but never can or does leave its own neighborhood. The picture that emerged in the local elections held on March 31, 2024, tells us only one thing; and that is the reality that a consistent, centrist politics, far from polarization, is of vital importance.

I do not think that existing political parties and/or ideological parties can conduct centrist politics. Our country's need for a democratic, libertarian, participatory, transparent, and accountable political system and order is increasing day by day. Centrist politics is actually the politics of the reasonable and of "values," far from ideologies. I believe that Turkey's future depends on politicians and political parties that believe in and have INTERNALIZED values and principles such as democracy, freedom, justice, the rule of law, separation of powers, transparency, accountability, and merit.

I would like to express my gratitude once again to Ms. Meral Akşener, with whom I walked a common path in the past period and who entrusted me first with the position of chief advisor and then with the position of deputy chairman. I also thank all my colleagues with whom I had the opportunity to work. While wishing the IYI Party extraordinary congress to be held on April 27, 2024, to be successful, I wish the current presidential candidates success. With my respect and love.."
