Hospital report for Mehmet Murat Çalık, who underwent surgery due to leukemia suspicion, emerges: 'Vital risk may increase'

The health condition of Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık, who was arrested on March 23 as part of an investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB), has become a matter of public concern. Çalık, who has previously undergone cancer treatment twice and is at risk due to his medical history, lost weight rapidly during his time in detention.

It was stated that Çalık lost 18 kilograms while in prison and was hospitalized on June 23 due to a mass detected on his neck. Following the discovery of serious findings in a bone marrow biopsy, he underwent surgery on July 4.

DIAGNOSED WITH "ACUTE MYELOID LEUKEMIA"

In the medical board report prepared by İzmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital on July 7, Mehmet Murat Çalık was diagnosed with "Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML M4)" and "Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma." After the surgery, Çalık was sent back to Buca Kırıklar Prison on July 8, but he fell ill again shortly after.

"PRISON CONDITIONS MAY INCREASE VITAL RISK"

The details of the hospital report clearly stated that prison conditions pose a serious risk to Çalık's health. The report stated, "Due to the patient's borderline rate of leukemia recurrence, prison conditions may contribute to a life-threatening risk."

Furthermore, the report included the following statements: "The patient is considered high-risk for leukemia recurrence. Close hematological follow-up is required. The assessment regarding the suitability of his sentence being served under house arrest must be made by the Council of Forensic Medicine."

"IT IS NOT NECESSARY FOR HIM TO REMAIN IN PRISON"

The medical board's report clearly stated that, given his current condition, it is "not necessary for him to remain in R-type Closed or Open Penal Institutions." Despite this, his return to prison immediately after treatment has drawn criticism.

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç, in his statement regarding Çalık's health condition, emphasized that the health status of detainees and convicts is evaluated meticulously and said:

"The health conditions of detainees and convicts are important. There are detainees and convicts who are released within the framework of hospital reports and Forensic Medicine reports. If the Council of Forensic Medicine concludes that it is not appropriate for a person to remain in prison, it is not possible for them to remain in detention."
