'Immunity' controversy! Harsh words from Mahmut Tanal to AKP's Metiner

Following the ban by the prosecutor's office on visuals of IMM President and CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is currently detained as part of investigations into the IMM, CHP deputies, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, and a Socialist International delegation unfurled a banner reading "Free İmamoğlu" while passing under the Bosphorus Bridge (newly named the 15 July Martyrs Bridge).

Özel, who waved to the deputies hanging the banner, chanted the slogan, "There is no salvation alone, either all together or none of us."

Following the hanging of the "Free İmamoğlu" banner on the 15 July Martyrs Bridge for the freedom of Ekrem İmamoğlu, an announcement came from the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office that "legal proceedings have been initiated." 

AKP'S METİNER ADDRESSED THE PARLIAMENT

Following the prosecutor's investigation decision, AKP's Mehmet Metiner supported the decision, stating, "The judiciary is doing its job, but the political institution and the TBMM are paving the way for the abuse of immunity by not touching those summaries of proceedings (fezleke). The prosecutor's summaries will go to the TBMM. And they will wait there without any action being taken. Since the deputies know this, they listen to neither judicial decisions, nor law, nor statutes. I think the immunity of deputies who have such summaries of proceedings should be lifted."

A STRIKING QUESTION FROM TANAL TO METİNER

CHP Şanlıurfa Deputy Mahmut Tanal reacted to AKP's Metiner's statement regarding immunity.

Tanal used the following expressions in his post on his social media account:

"Mr. Mehmet Metiner, we are watching with astonishment as you appear to embrace the principle of 'parliamentary immunity' that the CHP has defended for years regarding deputy immunity today. However, what should really be questioned is your political record.

Yesterday you were in the ranks of different parties, today you are defending the AKP without question. Since you are so principled and transparent: What car were you driving before you became a deputy, and what are you driving now?

How many children do you have, and what public or private duties do they work in? While the equipped, qualified youth of this country are unemployed, what are your children busy with?

Those who turn politics into a tool for personal gain have neither the right nor the legitimacy to lecture on 'immunity'!

Immunity is not a privilege to commit crimes; it is to protect the freedom of thought and expression of a deputy serving on behalf of the people. The rest will answer to the conscience of the public."
