Investigation had been launched: Davutoğlu invited Erdoğan to his son's wedding

It has been reported that former Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu invited President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to his son's wedding ceremony, which will take place this Saturday.

Sözcü columnist İsmail Saymaz shared the information on his X account, stating, “This Saturday is the wedding ceremony of former Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu’s son. President Erdoğan is among those invited.”

It was noted that Davutoğlu extended the invitation before the “insulting the President” investigation was launched against him, and that no response has been received from Erdoğan yet.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVESTIGATION

The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had launched an investigation into Davutoğlu due to a speech he gave during a visit to the Genç district of Bingöl in 2021. The recirculation of his response to a question on social media brought the investigation process back to the agenda.

In that speech, Davutoğlu had stated, “Unlike the ministers after me, I did not eat a single penny of illicit food. I told them, ‘Do not eat illicit food.’ They did. They enriched their circles. He made his son-in-law a minister. He enriched his relatives. He handed over Turkey to five contractors.”

Davutoğlu, who gave his statement last Monday as part of the investigation, argued in his statement upon leaving the courthouse that being summoned to the courthouse as a “suspect” for expressing his thoughts was a first in the history of the Republic of Turkey.

In his statement, Davutoğlu reiterated that he stood by his words, saying, “I did not insult; I demanded accountability. I did not demean; I criticized. I did not commit a crime; I exercised my constitutional right and political responsibility.”
