Turkey will head to the polls for local elections on March 31, 2024.
In Istanbul, one of the cities where the critical election is most anticipated, the race is expected to be between the AKP and MHP candidate Murat Kurum and the CHP candidate, the incumbent Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.
Another city where eyes are turned in the local elections is Ankara.
Having lost both Istanbul and Ankara in 2019, the AKP aims to win both cities back on March 31. In the race in Ankara, Mansur Yavaş and Turgut Altınok stand out.
Sözcü columnist İsmail Saymaz made assessments regarding Istanbul and Ankara in his article titled "İmamoğlu is turning the May 14 arithmetic upside down."
Saymaz reported that PanoramaTR Director Osman Sert stated that "the belief among voters that Yavaş will win has reached 70 percent."
Stating that the AKP has lost hope in Ankara, Saymaz commented on Mansur Yavaş, saying "I can say that Yavaş is running the easiest election campaign in his political history."
In his article, Saymaz also included the Istanbul poll by Metropoll Research Company.
According to what Saymaz reported, the results of the latest election poll conducted by Metropoll in Istanbul are as follows;
“Ekrem İmamoğlu: 34.7 percent
Murat Kurum: 32.1 percent
Meral Danış Beştaş: 4.9 percent
Buğra Kavuncu: 2.5 percent
Azmi Karamahmutoğlu: 2 percent
Mehmet Altınöz: 1.8 percent
After the undecided voters are distributed, İmamoğlu rises to 43.5 percent, Kurum to 40.2 percent, Beştaş to 6.1 percent, Kavuncu to 3.1 percent, Karamahmutoğlu to 2.5 percent, and Altınöz to 2.3 percent.”
Drawing attention to the elections on May 14 in the continuation of his article, Saymaz used the following expressions;
On May 14, the AK Party received 36 percent of the votes in Istanbul, and its partner MHP received 6.2 percent.
A total of 42 percent.
The CHP, on the other hand, joined forces with Saadet, DEVA, Gelecek, and the Democrat Party but only received 28.3 percent.
The difference between them reaches 14 points.
Looking at this picture, shouldn't Kurum have already declared his victory?
According to the arithmetic, the People's Alliance (Cumhur) maintaining its own vote is enough to win Istanbul. However, the AK Party cannot say "Oh, we won." Even in the AK Party's most engaged polls, Kurum can only pass İmamoğlu by half a point or one point.
IT WILL NOT JUST BE ISTANBUL THAT WINS
How is this possible?
İmamoğlu, who joined hands with Özgür Özel, is slowly turning the CHP like a millstone, pushing it to the center and receiving votes from all segments.
According to Optimar...
76.2 percent of Good Party (İyi Parti) voters, 56.7 percent of DEM voters, 35.5 percent of Victory Party (Zafer Partisi) voters, 12.4 percent of MHP voters, and 9.4 percent of AK Party voters say they "could vote for İmamoğlu."
If İmamoğlu wins, he will have achieved the second political miracle in recent political history after Erdoğan.
If he loses...
It will not just be İmamoğlu who loses.
If he wins...
It will not just be Istanbul that wins."
