İYİ Party sets 'parliamentary system' condition for new constitution

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş met with İYİ Party Chairman Müsavat Dervişoğlu.

The two appeared before cameras following the meeting held at the İYİ Party Headquarters.

'THIS IS NOT A FANTASY'

In his statement, Parliament Speaker Kurtulmuş said, "Constitutional debates in Turkey have continued for decades. Therefore, a significant portion of the parties currently in parliament have kept a new constitution or a very comprehensive constitutional amendment proposal on their political agendas. This is not a fantasy, a wish, or a party-specific matter. To make this the nation's constitution, we must use the parliamentary floor flawlessly. I hope that a new constitutional text proposal will be accepted in parliament with an alliance of over 400 votes."

'WE ARE SEEKING A PARLIAMENTARY SYSTEM'

İYİ Party Chairman Müsavat Dervişoğlu, emphasizing that Turkey has more pressing issues, stated, "We will not allow new regulations that would fortify this system. Our search for a parliamentary democratic system continues. If a situation regarding a constitutional amendment in this direction arises in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), then we will evaluate it."

Dervişoğlu also added, "Constitutional debates should not overshadow priority issues. Turkey is experiencing a serious economic bottleneck. Our people are living below the poverty line. There are significant problems stemming from education. Young people are searching for a future in visa queues. There is a war to the north of Turkey, and a threat of war to its east and west. We also have security problems on our southern border. Furthermore, our country is facing a demographic invasion. Constitutional talks must not overshadow all of these."

The İYİ Party Chairman added that they would discuss and evaluate the meeting within the party's internal bodies.
