Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the former chairman of the CHP, will visit CHP's presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was removed from his position as IMM Mayor following his arrest, in prison.
This visit is being evaluated as a significant show of support in the political arena.
WHY WAS İMAMOĞLU ARRESTED?
In a statement, the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office stated that İmamoğlu was arrested on charges of "establishing and managing a criminal organization, accepting bribes, extortion, unlawfully recording personal data, and rigging tenders."
İmamoğlu had denied the accusations and argued that the operations were political.
The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office stated that there was "strong suspicion of the crime of aiding an armed terrorist organization" regarding İmamoğlu, but that it was "not deemed necessary at this stage" to arrest him again, as he had already been ordered to be arrested for financial crimes.
WHAT POLITICAL AND LEGAL CONSEQUENCES COULD İMAMOĞLU'S ARREST HAVE?
Reports that emerged in the morning regarding a judicial control decision for İmamoğlu in a "terrorism" investigation were later denied.
In the corruption investigation, along with İmamoğlu, many bureaucrats and business people, including Medya A.Ş. Board Member Murat Ongun, Istanbul Planning Agency (İPA) President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Buğra Gökçe, İmamoğlu İnşaat General Manager Tuncay Yılmaz, and İBB Kültür A.Ş. General Manager Murat Abbas, were also arrested.
