The visit of IYI Party's former chair Meral Akşener to AKP Chair and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Presidential Palace continues to be a hot topic.
While rumors circulate in the corridors regarding Akşener's surprise visit, including claims that she 'will be appointed as Vice President', the IYI Party stated that the meeting in question does not bind the party.
CHP's 7th Chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu made assessments regarding the meeting that has dominated the agenda.
Speaking to Saygı Öztürk from Sözcü, Kılıçdaroğlu drew attention to which side the meeting request came from and used the following expressions:
“The first question regarding this meeting should be who the request for the meeting came from. Was this meeting held at the invitation of Mr. Erdoğan, or at the request of Ms. Akşener? This is important. Based on this, I can make the following assessment:
1-If Ms. Akşener held this meeting at Erdoğan's request, it means surrendering to Erdoğan's power.
2-If it was her own request, meaning if Ms. Akşener says, 'I requested the meeting, and therefore Mr. Erdoğan accepted this request,' then Ms. Akşener must explain the reasons for this to the public.
If Ms. Akşener requested a meeting with Erdoğan, she must explain it. Because it is understood that even IYI Party Chair Müsavat Dervişoğlu was bypassed."

"Holding such a meeting is at the very least inconsistent with party ethics and is contrary to them" said Kılıçdaroğlu, adding "It is inconsistent with party ethics because it is not ethical for someone who has served as the chair of a party for many years to meet with Erdoğan while bypassing their own party."

Kılıçdaroğlu answered what Akşener should have done at that stage as follows:
“She should have informed her party. In other words, if the meeting was her own request before it took place, she definitely should have said, 'I am going to meet with Erdoğan for these reasons.' Or if it was at Erdoğan's request, she should have at least asked her own party by saying, 'Yes, I am going to meet with Erdoğan. Erdoğan has such a request. Is there anything you want me to say as a party?' Ms. Akşener is the one who needs to speak and enlighten the public here. I don't know why she hasn't enlightened them. There are reports in the media that she requested an ambassadorship for her son and a vice presidency for herself. Of course, I don't say too much about those. What is important here is who the meeting request came from.”

Kılıçdaroğlu gave the following response to the question of whether the meeting in question was related to the softening of politics:
“For there to be a softening or normalization in politics, Ms. Meral needs to maintain her position as the party chair as an actor. She needs to be in that position. Ms. Akşener is not in that position. I honestly do not know why Akşener held such a meeting. I do not know for what reason Akşener left the Table of Six and for what reason she returned to the table. I would like to ask her this one day.”
