The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) General Assembly saw a debate over the name of the "Kürt böreği" (Kurdish pastry) among HEDEP, MHP, and İYİ Party deputies.
''IF YOU ARE THIS RACIST, DON'T EAT IT''
Beştaş noted that there has been a debate recently over whether it is called "Kürt böreği" or "küt böreği," and stated that a pastry chain has been marketing the product under the name "küt böreği." Asserting that the name of the pastry is "Kürt böreği," Beştaş said, "Kürt böreği is Kürt böreği. Racism and flavor are not things that go together. Keep your hands off this pastry. If you are this racist, then don't eat it."
MHP Group Deputy Chair Erkan Akçay responded to Beştaş's remarks by saying, "You are the one being racist. This is the first time I've heard of this."
''I HEARD IT FOR THE FIRST TIME''
İYİ Party Group Deputy Chair Dervişoğlu said to TBMM Deputy Speaker Sırrı Süreyya Önder, "Mr. Speaker, we would like some of that pastry," while Akçay added, "We eat Kürt böreği, we eat Arnavut böreği (Albanian pastry), and we eat Çerkez tavuğu (Circassian chicken), but this is the first time I've heard of this."
HEDEP's Beştaş stated that she would bring some pastry next time. Önder remarked, "What we eat up to a certain age, and what we don't eat after a certain age, keeps us alive. They could have called it 'so-called Kürt böreği,' so may God be pleased with them for at least calling it 'küt'."
