Former minister Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya, who previously made headlines over allegations of manipulative transactions in Özata Denizcilik shares and reportedly resigned from her positions within the AKP during that process, is now at the center of a new controversy regarding her family's assets.
Journalist Yiğit Uzun shared land registry records with the public concerning real estate he claims is registered in the name of Kaya and her close family members. The posts listed high-value lands, villas, and apartments allegedly registered to family members.
Kaya had previously been in the spotlight over allegations that she and her husband had earned over 2 billion TL in a 5-month period through transactions involving Özata Denizcilik shares. Following those allegations, it was reported that Kaya had resigned from all her positions within the AKP.
WHAT WAS ALLEGED IN THE LAND REGISTRY RECORDS?
According to the information shared by Uzun, it was alleged that there are 5 separate plots of land totaling 66,400 square meters in Köseilyas, Süleymanpaşa, Tekirdağ, registered in the name of Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya's mother, Hatice Sayan. It was claimed that the total value of these lands is between 250 million TL and 300 million TL.
Among the allegations is that Hatice Sayan owns a luxury villa in the Alkent 2000 villa complex in Büyükçekmece, Istanbul. It was stated that the deed for the villa was acquired in 2018, the year Kaya was a minister, and that prices for villas in the complex range between 150 million TL and 300 million TL.
The shared list also alleged that Hatice Sayan owns two more plots of land in Yenice, Tekirdağ, totaling 171,000 square meters, with the value of these properties ranging between 80 million TL and 120 million TL. It was also alleged that Hatice Sayan owns 4 apartments in Istanbul and a company named “Hayat Var Gayrimenkul Yatırım İnşaat AŞ,” which she established in 2022.
It was alleged that Kaya's older brother, EPDK member Ömer Fatih Sayan, owns a luxury apartment at Four Winds Park Residence in Kadıköy and a villa at Omega Yeşiltepe Villas in Pendik. It was argued that the total value of the two properties reached 130 million TL and that both purchases were made in 2018.
It was further alleged that Kaya's sister, Nazmiye Sümeyye Sayan, owns a duplex villa with a pool in Türkoba, Büyükçekmece, and an apartment in Alibeyköy; it was claimed that these properties were purchased shortly after Kaya left her ministerial post.
The fact that Kaya was previously hired as an engineer at the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) subsidiary İSBAK and subsequently received a scholarship for her master's degree in New York has also returned to the agenda. According to an investigation conducted at the İBB during the Ekrem İmamoğlu era, it was stated that payments totaling 85,791 dollars and 20,289 liras were made to Kaya, and that Kaya went to the USA on January 12, 2009, shortly after being hired.
