Tensions rose in the General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey as Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek arrived at Parliament to be sworn in as Minister of Justice, and Erzurum Governor Mustafa Çiftçi arrived to be sworn in as Minister of Interior.

CHP OBJECTS: "HE CANNOT TAKE THE OATH"

CHP deputies argued that Akın Gürlek could not take the oath, claiming he had not resigned from his position as Chief Public Prosecutor. From the AKP benches, this claim was rejected, with the assertion that the process was in accordance with the Constitution.

NO PROCEDURAL ERROR

Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Bekir Bozdağ, in his assessment following the debates, stated that there was no procedural deficiency in the swearing-in process.

SQUABBLE AROUND THE PODIUM

When Bozdağ invited Akın Gürlek to the podium to take the oath, CHP deputies headed toward the podium in protest. Following this, as AKP deputies also took to the podium, a scuffle broke out in the General Assembly.

PUNCH THROWN, TANAL HOSPITALIZED

During the scuffle, it was observed that AKP Ankara Deputy Osman Gökçek punched CHP Şanlıurfa Deputy Mahmut Tanal. While the moments when Tanal's nose was bleeding drew attention, it was reported that the CHP deputy was taken to the hospital.
