Mamak Mayor Veli Gündüz Şahin has announced that he has resigned from the Republican People's Party (CHP). In a statement shared on his social media account, Şahin cited a "difference in vision" regarding service philosophy, projects, and working methods as the reason for his decision.
In the March 31 Local Elections, the CHP achieved success in numerous districts, including the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality. Mamak Municipality had also passed to CHP administration after a long interval with the election of Veli Gündüz Şahin.
Şahin's resignation comes at a time when debates are ongoing regarding whether mayors will join the NEW Party founded by Özgür Özel. It is expected that Şahin will complete the process of joining the NEW Party in the coming days.
Stating in his announcement that winning Mamak Municipality back for the CHP after 25 years was a great source of pride for him, Şahin said, "A crossroads has become a necessity for me in order to provide the services Mamak deserves without interruption, not to let down your trust, and to take the steps that will carry our district further with determination."
Şahin stated that he presented his decision to the public as a departure from his CHP membership, which he held with "great effort and commitment."
