Meral Akşener's much-discussed 'thief' remark: 'The people we helped get elected...'

Speaking at her party's iftar program in Nevşehir, IYI Party leader Meral Akşener said, "It is impossible to describe the pain we felt when we realized that the people we all gave speeches about honesty for, believed were honest, and helped get elected, were later revealed to be massive thieves."

IYI Party Chair Meral Akşener, who did not achieve the expected results in the March 31 Local Elections, visited Nevşehir, the only province her party won.

Congratulating Mayor Rasim Arı, Akşener later attended an iftar program held in the city.

Akşener made striking remarks during her speech there.

"It is impossible to describe the pain we felt when we realized that the people we all gave speeches about honesty for, believed were honest, and helped get elected, were later revealed to be massive thieves," said Akşener, adding, "For instance, I am very sad. Not because of the vote percentage we received or the number of places we won or lost. That is a message our nation has given us. We will take that message, think about it, and evaluate it. But today, I am experiencing a happiness here that you cannot imagine. There is a restoration of a right."
