Mesut Özarslan breaks his silence: 'AK Party is possible, MHP is too'

Following Keçiören Mayor Mesut Özarslan's resignation from the CHP, four more municipal officials have left the party. In a live broadcast, Özarslan responded to the question of which party he would join next.

Keçiören Mayor Mesut Özarslan announced on his social media account that he has officially parted ways with the Republican People's Party (CHP). Özarslan issued a statement explaining the reasons for his departure and targeted CHP Chairman Özgür Özel. Özarslan began his criticisms by asking, "Does a party chairman curse at a mayor?"

HARSH CRITICISM FROM ÖZARSLAN TO ÖZGÜR ÖZEL

In his statement, Mesut Özarslan used very harsh expressions toward CHP Chairman Özgür Özel. Reacting to attacks on family values, Özarslan asked, "Does a party chairman curse at a mayor? Does a party chairman target family values and insult them?" Özarslan stated, "While my respect for the Republican People's Party voters remains, it is no longer possible for me to serve in the ranks of the Republican People's Party."

WILL HE JOIN THE AKP? 

Following Özarslan's resignation from the CHP, claims began to emerge in political circles that he would join the AKP. Responding to a journalist who asked him this question during a live broadcast on CNN Türk, Özarslan said, "Such a situation has not arisen at the moment. We will see; it could be the AK Party, it could be the MHP, I don't know. Perhaps we could serve as independents, I don't know." 

SUCCESSIVE RESIGNATIONS

Following Mesut Özarslan's resignation from the CHP, there were successive resignations at the Keçiören Municipality. Keçiören Municipal Council Member Azra Ceylan Öztürk, Keçiören Deputy Mayor Serkan Bedirhanoğlu, and Keçiören Municipal Council Member Cihan Ayhan also announced that they had left their party. It was noted that the resignations took place in parallel with Özarslan's decision.

Journalist Sinan Burhan and AKP member Savcı Sayan also clarified the claims frequently discussed in political circles regarding Özarslan joining the AKP. While Burhan stated that it was finalized that Özarslan would join the AKP, Savcı Sayan even announced a date, saying, "My source is solid as steel. Keçiören Mayor Mesut Özarslan will be in our AK Party on Wednesday." Sayan added, "Three powerful figures have convinced our President." 

Sayan claimed that there would be serious defections from the CHP following the resignation.
