CHP Chairman Özgür Özel made striking statements regarding the establishment of the People's Alliance during a program he attended on Halk TV. Opposing the government's narrative that it was "born in the hearts of the nation on July 15," Özel used the following expressions:
"The People's Alliance was not established on the streets or anything like that on July 15. The People's Alliance was established in a civil court of first instance. Meral Akşener was becoming the leader of the party with 900 votes. You established it with a decision from a civil court of first instance, through the mediation of an AKP İzmir deputy. Now, with a new civil court scheme, the same offer is being made to the CHP. We are showing that we will not act like that chairman."
REFERENCE TO THE 2016 MHP CONGRESS
Özel's words were a reference to the extraordinary congress process that the MHP experienced in 2016. At that time, the Tosya Civil Court of First Instance had halted all proceedings, including the call for a congress, through an interim injunction, and this decision paved the way for Meral Akşener to leave the MHP and establish a new party.
HARSH REACTION FROM YÖNTER: "UNPARALLELED SLANDER"
The response from the MHP to the CHP leader's words did not take long. MHP Deputy Chairman İzzet Ulvi Yönter targeted Özel with harsh expressions in a statement he made on the social media platform X.
In his post where he tagged Özel, Yönter used the following expressions:
"Özgür, you have clung to slander and baseless claims as always on a television channel. You are good for nothing, your end has come; you will be remembered as the disgrace of politics... You are a pathetic Özgür, whose equal in slander cannot be found... Even pitying you is a sin..."
