MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli's remarks, "Turkish history was not written at the ballot box. Everyone should come to their senses and remember that as long as they sow the wind, they will reap the whirlwind," were met with a response from CHP leader Özgür Özel, who said, "I cannot bring myself to say that this country was not founded at the ballot box; I would like to believe it was a slip of the tongue rather than ignorance."

MHP Secretary General and Bursa Deputy İsmet Büyükataman responded to Özgür Özel as follows:

"Özgür Özel, who recently targeted our democracy and winked at bloodthirsty coup plotters with his words 'if the youth stage a coup, I will surrender,' has once again pursued petty agendas by distorting the words of our Chairman, Mr. Devlet Bahçeli. The statements of the CHP and its Chairman—who finds and embraces every FETÖ member hostile to Turkish democracy, every PKK member, and who sits at the feet of any international network targeting Turkish democracy, having abandoned its founding principles—are nothing more than a simple attempt at illusion.

The Nationalist Movement Party is a political party that has passed significant tests for the sake of the continuation of our democracy, has shown great sacrifices along this path, and whose determined stance on this issue is indisputable. Our recent political history clearly shows us that the Nationalist Movement Party and our Chairman, Mr. Devlet Bahçeli, are the greatest enemies of those who oppose the national will and the highest will they cannot overcome. Özel's unfortunate statements are either due to his blocked cognitive pathways or because he has shrunk to the point of hoping for help from stale wordplay."
