The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) had identified a violation of rights and ordered the release of former Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş in its second ruling regarding his detention.
The court ruled that Turkey had violated Articles 5 and 18 of the European Convention on Human Rights, a decision that sparked debates in Ankara.
APPEAL PERIOD ENDS ON OCTOBER 8
Turkey has the right to appeal the ECHR ruling. The fact that this period expires on October 8 had led to interpretations that Demirtaş could be released after this date.
However, it has been learned that the Ministry of Justice took action shortly before the deadline.
MINISTRY DELEGATION IN STRASBOURG
According to information reported by Hilal Köylü from Serbestiyet, Ministry of Justice officials have traveled to Strasbourg, France, as part of preparations to appeal the ECHR ruling.
It was stated that the delegation is there to submit the appeal on behalf of Turkey and to convey the message that "the appropriate conditions for Demirtaş's release have not been met."
