The failure to arrest Ekrem İmamoğlu on "terrorism" charges within the scope of the investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) was criticized by AKP member Mücahit Birinci. Birinci argued that this situation prevented the appointment of a trustee to the İBB and that Istanbul has suffered as a result.
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had previously announced that there was strong suspicion of a crime regarding the accusation of "aiding an armed terrorist organization" against İmamoğlu, but that it was not deemed necessary to arrest him on "terrorism" charges at that stage because he was already detained for financial crimes.
HARSH CRITICISM FROM BİRİNCİ
In a statement made on social media, Mücahit Birinci stated that the failure to arrest İmamoğlu on "terrorism" charges negatively affected Istanbul. Birinci said, "Istanbul's traffic, garbage problem, and infrastructure issues have become unbearable. This situation arose because İmamoğlu was not arrested in a manner consistent with the law," he said.
Birinci's post is as follows:
'The fact that Ekrem was not arrested on terrorism charges, with a justification that is contrary to the law, in order to avoid appointing a trustee to the İBB, has finished off Istanbul, I say this openly.
Morning traffic is now a complete disgrace. Istanbul is at a standstill. Garbage is piled up like mountains. The asphalt is full of potholes. Side roads are almost like fields. Public transport timing, etc., is a complete fiasco. They cannot even keep the escalators running...
It was a very critical mistake...'
HE HAD RESIGNED FROM THE AKP
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel had alleged that Mücahit Birinci, who has held various positions in the AKP in the past, visited Murat Kapki, who is imprisoned in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) investigation, and during this visit, Birinci placed a 1.5-page paper in front of Kapki and said, "You will sign this, and you will also pay 2 million dollars, and that is how you will get out of here."
While an investigation was launched into the subject following Özel's agenda-shaking revelation of the İBB stock market, the AKP had referred Birinci to the disciplinary board with a request for his permanent expulsion.
Birinci had announced that he resigned from the AKP before the decision regarding him was issued.
Lawyer Birinci, for whom the Ministry of Justice granted permission for an investigation, had been summoned to testify as a suspect.
After taking his statement, the prosecutor's office referred Birinci to the criminal judgeship of peace with a request for judicial control in the form of a travel ban and a requirement to sign in.
The court decided to impose judicial control measures on Birinci, including a travel ban and a requirement to sign in.
