Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu case reaches statute of limitations
Due to a 12-year statute of limitations process, the prison sentences handed down to the defendants tried in connection with the death of Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu have been dropped. Following the decision by the 5th Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation, the case file has reached the statute of limitations.

In the case opened regarding the helicopter crash in which Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu lost his life in 2009, three public officials, including the then-Governor of Kahramanmaraş, Mehmet Niyazi Tanılır, had been sentenced to 1 year and 2 months in prison each for "misconduct in office."
However, after this 2021 ruling, the case file, which was moved to the General Assembly of Criminal Chambers of the Court of Cassation, reached the statute of limitations, causing the defendants' sentences to be dropped.
IT WAS ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN PLANNED BY FETÖ
Following the helicopter crash that occurred in 2009, in which Yazıcıoğlu and 5 people accompanying him lost their lives, a lawsuit was filed against 9 high-level public officials. Among the defendants were the then-Gendarmerie General Command Information Systems Technician, the Civil Defense Manager, the Police Intelligence Branch Manager, and Gendarmerie and Police officials. The lawyer for the Yazıcıoğlu family had alleged that the assassination was planned by FETÖ and that the helicopter was sabotaged.
In its 2021 trial, the 5th Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation had sentenced the then-Governor of Kahramanmaraş, Tanılır, former Provincial Gendarmerie Commander Akgün, and former Provincial Police Chief Çelikbilek to 1 year and 2 months in prison each for "misconduct in office." However, it was decided that there was no room for the suspension of the sentences as the defendants did not show remorse. The other defendants were acquitted.
After the case was moved to the General Assembly of Criminal Chambers of the Court of Cassation, the file was not taken up due to the 12-year statute of limitations, and the sentences given to the defendants were dropped.
