Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Mardin Metropolitan Municipality co-mayoral candidate Ahmet Türk made statements regarding the local elections on March 31, 2024.

In a television program he joined recently, Türk had stated: "We had no belief that Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu would solve the Kurdish issue. We still don't. The CHP does not have the capacity to solve such a massive problem. There is no leader there today. If anyone wants to solve it, Erdoğan can solve it, because he is a leader."

Following this widely discussed statement, Ahmet Türk clarified his words.

"ERDOĞAN IS THE LEADER WHO HAS CAUSED THE MOST PAIN TO THE KURDS"

Speaking to Ferit Aslan from Medyascope, Ahmet Türk said: "I said, 'He has power within the state, he can solve it if he wants to.' Erdoğan is the leader who has caused the most pain to the Kurds today; I expressed this as well, it is not something praising him."

STATEMENT ON THE SOLUTION PROCESS

Stating that a new solution process does not seem possible after the local elections, Türk said:

"I think the wise people in Turkey and the logic that will govern Turkey have started to see some things. They have begun to see that policies of trying to turn Kurds into Turks or Alevis into Sunnis have brought nothing. But I do not think such a thing will happen in the short term. The infrastructure for this needs to be prepared correctly, and the environment must be prepared by giving the right messages to the public."

"NO DEAL WAS MADE WITH THE AKP"

Addressing the allegations that a deal was made with the AKP because the DEM Party is fielding its own candidates in the local elections, Ahmet Türk said: "No such deal was ever made. Political parties participate in elections with their own candidates and struggle to come to power; that is the goal. We are also a party that defends democracy and freedoms. Ultimately, we decided to enter the elections with our own candidates."

"REACTIONS EMERGED IN OUR BASE"

In the interview, Ahmet Türk said that they gave very clear support to Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu in the general elections, but their votes dropped from 13 and 11 percent to 8 percent.

Stating that they faced the danger of their votes dropping because they did not enter the elections on their own, Türk said: "Reactions emerged in our base from time to time regarding this. In line with the demands from our people, our party decided to enter this election with its own candidates. There is absolutely no deal involved, and our decision should never be evaluated as a concession given to anyone."
