Following the revocation of presidential candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu's undergraduate degree, his master's degree has now also been deemed invalid. The newspaper Yeni Şafak announced on the morning of July 28 that the diploma had been revoked, while İmamoğlu's lawyers were not notified of this development.

It was noted that during the hours the news broke, İmamoğlu's diploma could still be viewed as active in the e-Devlet system. While this situation raised questions, an official statement from Istanbul University in the evening hours confirmed that the master's degree had indeed been revoked.

"NO UNDERGRADUATE GRADUATION"

According to information provided by Anadolu Agency, Istanbul University (İÜ) cited "failure to meet the undergraduate graduation requirement" and "missing documents at the time of admission to student status" as the grounds for the invalidation of the graduation.

In its statement, İÜ indicated that İmamoğlu's master's degree became automatically invalid due to his undergraduate degree being deemed "null and void" on March 18, 2025. At the same time, the lack of conditions during the student process was also one of the bases for the decision.

SECRETLY TAKEN ON JULY 24

With a decision taken at the meeting of the Istanbul University Institute of Social Sciences Board of Directors on July 24, it was decided to delete İmamoğlu's graduation record from the Academic Registration System (AKSİS) and update it via the Higher Education Council Information System (YÖKSİS). Furthermore, instructions were given to remove his master's thesis from the YÖK National Thesis Center.

LAWYERS LEARNED OF THE NEWS FROM THE PRESS

Neither the diploma revocation decision nor the reasoned statement of the university board was notified to İmamoğlu's lawyers. The lawyers stated that they could only follow the situation through reports in the press.

Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was officially nominated as a presidential candidate by the CHP on March 6, 2025, had come to the agenda with the revocation of his undergraduate degree on March 18. İmamoğlu, who was detained the following day, has been imprisoned in Silivri since March 23.
