Numan Kurtulmuş's statement on the İmralı process: 'The law will not be applied until disarmament is confirmed'

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, in his assessment regarding the İmralı process, stated that legal steps will be brought to the agenda only after it is confirmed that the PKK has laid down its arms.

Speaking at the 28th Term 4th Legislative Year Evaluation Meeting held in Ankara, Kurtulmuş said regarding the legal dimension of the process, "The law will not be applied until it is confirmed that arms have been laid down."

Arguing that Turkey's goal of being cleared of terrorism is no longer just a wish, Kurtulmuş said, "It is the construction of the path to a Turkey without terrorism. We will see a Turkey that is completely free from terrorism. A Turkey without terrorism is not just a wish; it is slowly taking shape."

Touching upon the developments in Iraq and Syria, Kurtulmuş said that the developments in the region are the reflections of the process on the ground.

Announcing that a monitoring commission will be established within the Parliament in the new legislative term, Kurtulmuş said, "With the opening of the Parliament, the monitoring commission will be established quickly and will fulfill its responsibility regarding the monitoring of the process."

Kurtulmuş stated that the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) has three fundamental responsibilities ahead of it, listing them as the serious monitoring of the process, its observation within a legal framework, and the enactment of new legal regulations if the need arises.
