Ömer Çelik responds to Özgür Özel's 'coup' remarks

AKP Spokesperson Ömer Çelik has issued a harsh response to CHP leader Özgür Özel's statement, "If young people stage a coup, I will surrender." In a statement on his social media account, Çelik described the remarks as "a complete lapse of reason."

Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel, in a speech at his party's youth branch event, stated: "If the phone rings again at three in the morning tomorrow and they say a coup is happening, I would jump up and rush out, I wouldn't care who is doing it. But if they say that young people are doing it, that all politicians over the age of 40 will be purged, I would surrender to that coup."

AKP Spokesperson Ömer Çelik responded to Özel's words.

"A COMPLETE LAPSE OF REASON"

Reacting to Özel, Çelik said, "It is a complete lapse of reason for Özel to mention our youth alongside an ominous and cursed act like a 'coup,' to mention them in the same sentence, and to equate supporting the youth with a coup."

In a statement made via social media, Çelik used the following expressions:

"Young people should always be mentioned alongside freedom, democracy, and change.

CHP Chairman Mr. Özgür Özel, however, made a statement that is incompatible with political reason during a broadcast, saying, 'If the phone rings at night and they say a coup is happening, but they say young people are doing it, I would surrender to that coup.'

Mr. Özel's statement has once again shown how significant the democracy deficit is within the CHP and how foreign the CHP administration is to the alphabet of democracy. It is also grave that Mr. Özel's political vocabulary is so shallow."
