Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel paid a 'congratulatory' visit to the new chairman of the IYI Party, Müsavat Dervişoğlu.
Following the meeting, the two leaders held a joint press conference.
DERVİŞOĞLU: WE TOUCHED UPON ALL OF TURKEY'S ISSUES
Müsavat Dervişoğlu's statements are as follows;
"Mr. Özgür Özel came to visit our party and me. I thank him. We held a long meeting with our delegations. We touched upon all of Turkey's issues. We also shared our mutual views on them. We worked with him in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) as group deputy chairmen. We carried out productive work there and achieved significant results. Our meetings will continue in the coming period as well.
I cannot say that this visit is an important beginning; we are not looking for a beginning. We are looking for unity."
ÖZEL: WE WILL NOT OPPOSE THE OPPOSITION
Highlights from Özgür Özel's statements are as follows;
"The relationship between the IYI Party and the CHP has progressed in mutual courtesy and cooperation.
I wish the chairman success in this important duty. As our chairman just said, our personal relationship is based on both the past and a very successful shared history. Our electoral districts are neighbors. We met in Parliament as counterparts, as group deputy chairmen. The dialogue that developed between us over time, and our mutual sincerity, reached a foundation so strong that we could understand what the other was saying just by looking at their eyes. We have a history of contributing to overcoming many difficulties and crises without them escalating, just as we have never had any conflict with each other. As two chairmen, I am honored that our paths have crossed again.
We will conduct our relations as two political parties that have groups in Parliament. We will continue to stand together on issues for the benefit of the public. We will not oppose the opposition."
Q&A
When asked about the Ayhan Bora Kaplan crisis within the police force, Dervişoğlu replied, "I made an assessment in yesterday's group speech. Such things are voiced by the chairmen of political parties, but opposition parties do not possess highly reliable information about what is happening. Therefore, I must be careful not to make wrong interpretations with incomplete information. Also, you know me; I avoid giving off-the-cuff answers to important questions as much as possible. Regarding the other appointment, similar appointments are not happening for the first time in Turkey. Therefore, we have frequently expressed our complaints about such appointments, but such an appointment does not come as a surprise to us either. I invite the government and the person at its head to be careful on these matters."
"THE MATTER IS EXTREMELY WRONG"
Regarding the crisis in the police force and the appointment of Muhsin Şentürk, who withdrew from the Supreme Court presidency elections, as Supreme Court Chief Public Prosecutor by AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Özel stated, "Whatever the issue between the AKP and the MHP is; whether it is a tension, a bargain, or a mutual standoff. This is a struggle of elephants, but justice is being crushed underneath. Mothers are being crushed, children are being crushed. Today, the only expectation of Ayşe Ateş and Sinan Ateş's children regarding the process in which they lost their father is the meetings held behind closed doors. Then, the criminal story is further strengthened by implicitly posted tweets and implicitly made statements. The appointment made is not in line with the dialogue and normalization approach that has developed since March 31, after the two leaders met during a high judiciary election that turned into a 37-round papal election, where one candidate withdrew and did not demand another position, and there was a belief regarding where the votes going to that candidate would be directed. But either those voting in the Supreme Court did not comply with this imposition, or someone said 'let's withdraw the candidate but let our friends do what they know.' And the result in the Supreme Court was not as Erdoğan expected, but the appointment he made is unfortunately not in line with the dialogue and normalization approach that has developed since March 31. If you are appointing a symbolic name of constitutional violation as the Supreme Court Chief Public Prosecutor, it means you are insistent on violating the current Constitution. How will this country normalize? Everyone should come to their senses. If we are to live in peace, we must trust in justice. Under these conditions, where there is no trust in the court, there is no democracy. The matter is extremely wrong. The Minister of Justice and the Minister of Interior must make a statement as soon as possible."
