CHP Chairman Özgür Özel made statements to the press following his meeting with DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan in Saraçhane.
Expressing satisfaction with the interest shown by CHP members, Özel said:
"Everyone is closely following the ballot boxes we have set up for our 1 million 750 thousand members. There is great interest in the member ballot boxes. We have extended the voting period until 19:00. It is gratifying that our people are taking ownership of the process against the failed coup attempt on the streets. From the very first day, all opposition parties, especially the DEM Party, have shown solidarity."
Highlighting the importance of solidarity, Özel said, "I thank every segment of society that stands up for the will of the people in the face of this coup attempt."
DEMOCRACY IS BEING DESIGNED BY THE JUDICIARY
DEM Party Co-Chair Tuncer Bakırhan, in his statement, evaluated the events as an "attempt to design democracy through the judiciary."
Bakırhan noted the following:
"We know these coup attempts well. We also know very well that this coup will not achieve results. We are witnessing an effort to shape democracy by using the judiciary. These attempts cause serious damage not only to the reputation of Istanbul but also to that of Turkey."
Touching upon the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, Bakırhan said, "İmamoğlu was arrested without any justification. Such unlawful attempts must be abandoned immediately. What is being done in Istanbul causes great harm to peace and democracy."
Underlining that they will not compromise on the struggle for democracy and peace as the DEM Party, Bakırhan continued his words as follows:
"This is a new awakening. We will continue to stand with the same determination both in the struggle for democracy and in our efforts for peace in Turkey. We are in solidarity. We believe that a deep-rooted tradition of democracy will flourish in Turkey. I also thank Mr. Özgür Özel for his meaningful hospitality."
