Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel made important statements in front of the Istanbul Provincial Headquarters today following the funeral of Sırrı Süreyya Önder. While strongly condemning the attack that occurred after the funeral, Özel emphasized that they would continue to fight for Turkey's future without fear.
"We are not afraid, but they should be. If we bow even a centimeter, someone will bring this nation to its knees; we will not allow that," said Özel, noting that the attack against him was a threat to Turkey's struggle for democracy and freedom. "Every attack against democracy is an attack against all of us. We will never deviate from the path we know to be right," he said.
NEXT RALLY AT ISTANBUL UNIVERSITY
Özel also announced that the CHP would maintain its determined stance and that the next rally in Istanbul would be held at Istanbul University. He invited the participation of young people by saying, "I am waiting for all state and foundation university students at Beyazıt Square."
Özgür Özel spoke as follows:
"We were confronted with an attack attempt carried out by a murderer incited by someone, a murderer of a child. From that moment on, all our party members from across Turkey, as well as esteemed party leaders from the political sphere, have individually expressed their sensitivities and concerns. Today is not a day to incite hostility, hatred, or conflict, but let everyone know that today is also not a day to intimidate the CHP and its Chairman, whether with a punch, a bullet, a tank, or a rifle.
We are not afraid, but they should be. If we bow even a centimeter, someone will bring this nation to its knees; we will not allow that.
On Wednesday evening at 20:30, we will be at Istanbul University, at Beyazıt Square, where our Mayor Ekrem was invited by an advertisement 35 years ago, where he received his diploma 31 years ago, and where someone with no authority canceled his diploma after a Chief Public Prosecutor's instruction, even though the Faculty of Business Administration did not cancel it.
On Saturday, we will be in Van. We oppose the trustee appointed to Van."
