New Party Chairman Özgür Özel shared his assessments regarding democracy in Turkey, the pressures on the opposition, and the reasons for his party's establishment in an article he penned for the Italian press. Özel highlighted the message, "Authoritarianism is not Turkey's destiny."

In his article for Corriere della Sera titled "The New Party: A New Path to Change in Turkey," Özel stated that the New Party is not merely a new party added to political life. He expressed that the party was born out of "the need for a new understanding of democratic politics" during a period when democracy is under pressure.

In his article, Özel argued that 21st-century authoritarian regimes erode democracy from within rather than completely eliminating elections, drawing attention to issues such as the takeover of institutions, the weakening of the media, the politicization of the judiciary, and the intimidation of dissidents.

"POLITICAL COMPETITION MUST REMAIN FREE"

Özel claimed that Turkey has experienced democratic erosion under the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan era since 2002. Stating that the process has entered a more concerning phase as of March 2025, Özel wrote that Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu was arrested as part of investigations, and that more than thirty mayors have been removed from office or arrested.

Emphasizing that these developments are not just about election results, Özel stated, "The real issue is whether political competition in Turkey can truly remain free."

Stating that the New Party did not turn its back on Turkey's republican, democratic, and social democratic heritage when it separated from the CHP, Özel assessed, "On the contrary, we separated because we believe that keeping this legacy alive now requires opening a new path in politics."

Özel noted that his party aims for social unity and that they want to bring together democrats from different political traditions on the same ground. In his article, he highlighted issues such as judicial independence, accountable government, equal citizenship, and economic development creating opportunities.

Establishing a connection between Turkey and Italy through Mediterranean and European history, Özel argued that democracy is not only a moral principle but also a strategic strength. He stated that independent institutions would provide confidence to the economy, the rule of law would attract investment, and a democratic Turkey would be a more reliable partner for Europe and the Mediterranean.

Özel concluded his article by emphasizing Turkey's strong tradition of democracy, civil society, young population, and economic potential. He said, "No political era lasts forever. The new era has already begun."
