Parliament Deputy Speaker Gülizar Biçer Karaca of the CHP reacted to the appointment of trustees to the municipalities of Esenyurt, Mardin, Batman, and Halfeti.

In a statement on her social media account, Karaca said, "The government's appointment of trustees in place of elected mayors is a deliberate erosion by the government of the principle of independent and fair elections, which is the fundamental pillar of democracies."

"Such practices are among the tools and common strategies used by authoritarian regimes to consolidate their own existence," emphasized Karaca, adding, "The government's transformation into despotism and the rendering of elected local administrations dysfunctional through the appointment of trustees is a direct attack on the will of the people and the social contract."

THE GOVERNMENT HAS GOTTEN OFF THE DEMOCRACY TRAIN

Stating that "what is happening today is also a show of force by the government against the opposition and an effort to consolidate the regime's authority," Karaca continued as follows:

"We see that the government, which holds political power today, has gotten off the democracy train in order to sustain its own existence. However, sidelining democratic rights, which have been won through so much struggle, for the sake of an authoritarian regime will lead to irreversible destruction. History is full of similar examples."

WARNING ON NORMALIZATION

Criticizing the 'normalization' process in politics, Karaca stated, "Furthermore, this situation is also an expression of a picture where what is presented to the public under the name of softening or normalization is, in reality, the usurpation of democratic rights, and where the one-man government regime is eroding democratic mechanisms to protect its own survival, endangering the independence of law and elections. One must remain vigilant."

STANDING AGAINST THE AUTHORITARIAN REGIME IS A FUNDAMENTAL DUTY

Karaca concluded her statement as follows: "Today, while the loss of democratic values in Turkey threatens the country's future, the reconstruction of all democratic building blocks, primarily the rule of law, is essential for the freedom and prosperity of society. Protecting the belief in democracy and law, and standing against the corrosive effects of authoritarian regimes, is our most fundamental duty. This duty will be fulfilled."
