Protest ban imposed in Siirt following appointment of trustee to municipality

A trustee has been appointed to the Siirt Municipality following the sentencing of Siirt Co-Mayor Sofya Alağaş to 6 years and 3 months in prison in a case where she was charged with "being a member of an organization" during her time as a journalist.

Following the appointment of Siirt Governor Kemal Kızılkaya as the trustee to the municipality, a 10-day protest ban was imposed in the city by the Siirt Governor's Office. 

The statement made by the Siirt Governor's Office is as follows:

"In order to protect the fundamental qualities of the Republic, the indivisible integrity of the state and nation, national security, public order, the prevention of crime, the protection of the rights and freedoms of others, the protection of public health, and the prevention of potential social unrest;

Pursuant to the provisions of Articles 17 and 19 of the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911 and Article 11 of the Provincial Administration Law No. 5442;

Excluding events deemed appropriate by the Governor's Office and District Governor's Offices, programs organized by public institutions and organizations, official holidays, official commemoration days, official ceremonies and celebrations, programs to be held by these institutions in accordance with traditions and customs, and sports activities; all kinds of open-air meetings and demonstration marches, mass welcoming and farewell ceremonies, press statements, sit-ins, rallies, tent setups, signature campaigns, stand openings, mass funeral ceremonies, commemoration ceremonies, festivals, concerts, entertainment, theatrical performances, demonstrations, etc., all kinds of actions and events of this nature, all kinds of audio and visual activities that can be carried out with sound broadcasting vehicles, sky lanterns, balloon releases, drone, paramotor, etc., all kinds of aerial activities, and excluding the commercial activities of private legal entities with a commercial identity; the distribution of flyers, stickers, brochures, etc., the hanging of posters and banners, etc., as well as the entry into the provincial borders of vehicles and individuals coming collectively or individually to participate in any action or event planned to be held illegally; considering that there are serious indications that public order and security will be disrupted in a way that will stop or interrupt daily life, and on the grounds that it will be difficult to ensure life and property safety, personal immunity, and public peace, all kinds of actions that may be carried out in open areas within the framework of the subjects described above have been BANNED within the provincial and district administrative boundaries (within the provincial administrative boundaries) for a period of (10) days from 00.00 on 29.01.2025 to 23.59 on 07.02.2025, in accordance with Articles 17 and 19 of the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations No. 2911 and Article 11/C of the Provincial Administration Law No. 5442."
