Remarkable statement from within CHP: Tuesday is the critical day for presidential candidacy

The CHP has taken action to draw up a new roadmap following a wave of investigations targeting the party and the arrest of Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat.

Following comments that Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu is also being targeted, discussions on the presidential candidate have moved to the center of the party's agenda.

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel had announced last week that he would explain the roadmap, but postponed this statement due to the fire in Kartalkaya. In the 6 days that have passed, numerous meetings have been held within the party. Discussions have focused on the question, "Should the presidential candidate be announced immediately?"

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES WERE DISCUSSED

According to the report by Gazete Duvar, the advantages and disadvantages of announcing the candidate early were discussed in the meetings. It was argued that an early announcement would provide a natural protection by giving the candidate the identity of "the CHP's presidential candidate" and would serve as a balancing element against the government's media and judicial power.

However, the view was also expressed that acting hastily in determining the candidate could limit the contributions of all members and prevent a healthy process from being carried out.

CHP'S CANDIDACY STRATEGY

The general trend emerging from the meetings was in favor of determining the presidential candidate as soon as possible. The CHP's possible calendar could take shape as follows: Özgür Özel announcing the candidate determination method and the primary election date, a primary election being held with the participation of all members, and the candidate being announced following the results to begin the campaign process.

A CRITICAL STATEMENT MAY COME ON TUESDAY

Following these developments, CHP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Özgür Çelik noted that Özgür Özel is expected to make a detailed statement regarding the candidate determination process at the group meeting to be held on Tuesday.

Çelik stated, "A description of the method, though not a name, regarding the announcement of the presidential candidacy may be made at the group meeting this Tuesday."
